A curtain heading is the top piece of the curtain that attaches to the curtain track or rod. The heading style you choose can dramatically change the overall look of your finished curtains and will influence the type of rod or track you can use.
While there are a fair few different types of curtain headings to choose from, we've got all the definitions you need below.
PENCIL PLEAT CURTAIN HEADINGS
Pencil pleat curtain headings are popular because of their flexibility. You can gather the curtain to fit whatever width you desire and they can be hung from any curtain track using hooks or from a curtain rod using rings with hooks.
Pencil pleat curtains have a tape running through the top of the curtain head and cords which run along the top of the curtain. These strings can be pulled to achieve the desired gather and curtain width - whether their purpose is for fashion or functionality.
The fullness of a pencil pleat curtain will vary depending on the amount of gather you create with the pull cords. Generally speaking, we recommend 1.5-2.5 x fullness, meaning that 1.5-2.5m of fabric is used for every metre of track or rod.
EYELET CURTAIN HEADINGS
Eyelet curtain headings have quickly become a popular option in homes across New Zealand. That's because they create a modern finish and are easy to hang.
Metal rings are punched through the fabric at the top of the curtain which folds the material into large and even pleats. Similar to pencil pleats, the eyelet headings are popular as ready made curtains as they are suitable for use across a range of track widths.
It's worth noting that eyelets can only be hung from curtain rods and are not suitable for curtain tracks! The fullness of an eyelet curtain can vary but we recommend approximately 1.5 x fullness, meaning that 1.5m of fabric is used for every metre of rod.
NEW YORK PLEAT CURTAIN HEADING
Also know as Single Pleat, New York pleat curtains have a single pinch pleat secured at even intervals along the heading, resulting in a clean, contemporary look without much gather. They are made to a fixed width to perfectly fit your curtain track or curtain rod and are only available custom made.
New York pleat curtains can be hung from any curtain track using hooks or from a curtain rod using rings with hooks.
All our New York pleat curtains are custom made to a 1.8m x fullness, meaning that 1.8m of fabric is used for every metre of track or rod.
